What is Haemophilia?

Haemophilia is a usually inherited genetic condition that affects the bloods ability to clot.


Symptoms

-severe nosebleeds

-bleeding gums

-easily bruised skin

-bleeding from injuries lasts a long time

-painful and stiff joints (caused by internal bleeding in body)


Causes of Haemophilia

Haemophilia is caused by a genetic mutation in the genes that control blood clotting factors. It typically occurs in males.


Testing for haemophilia

Blood tests can determine if someone has haemophilia and can find out how severe it is.


Treatment

Haemophilia has no cure. Man-made clotting factors are injected into patients to prevent and treat prolonged bleeding.
