Huntington's Disease


what is Huntington's?


Huntington's is a disease that essentially stops parts of the brain from functioning properly The symptoms tend to gradually get worse after a period of 20 years.


what causes Huntington's?


Huntington’s disease is caused by a faulty gene that makes part of the brain gradually deteriorate overtime This is an inherited disease, this means that you are only at risk if one or both of your parents have/has had it.


who does this affect?

If the parent has the Huntington's disease gene...

there is a 50% chance of the child inheriting the disease the affected children have the ability to pass the disease on to any children they have.

however...

There is also a 50% chance the children will not inherit the gene and therefore can’t pass the gene on to their children


what are the symptoms of Huntington’s disease?


Hallucination - psychotic symptom

chorea - involuntary movement

trouble thinking and problem solving

mood changes - emotional instability

coordination problems - motor dysfunction

Behavioural and personality changes


treatment and support for Huntington’s disease


treatment includes:

medicines for depression, mood swings and involuntary movements occupation therapy physiotherapy


There is currently no cure for Huntington’s or any way of preventing the disease
